SimB Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 I'm trying to get to the bottom of a noise coming from the rear transmission. Its most noticable when lifting off the power at about 40-50mph. Its difficult to describe the noise - like an intermittent grinding . My diff is pretty noisy - but that's a different noise (whine). Not sure where to start looking so I'd appreciate any advice. I'm guessing checking the diff oil level and greasing the propshaft UJ's might be worthwhile?
BenBear Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 I have a similar problem. The noise starts when everything has warmed up and is worse when doing slow turns (i.e. the diff is working hard). It seems to be coming from the left hand side, but I'm not really sure as driving without side screens has had a bad effect on my ears (must get a flying helmet!). 2.0 HPC Green/Yellow Stripe
SimB Posted June 15, 2006 Author Posted June 15, 2006 The noise from mine is also worse when warmed up ... and I think it's getting worse with time too!
nickdodo Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 SimB, Do you have a live axle or dedion? Nick Nick in the (1987) 1700 X Flow...
BenBear Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 I've got a De-Dion Sorry, just noticed you were asking SimB 😳 2.0 HPC Green/Yellow Stripe Edited by - BenBear on 15 Jun 2006 20:12:32 Edited by - BenBear on 15 Jun 2006 20:12:46
SimB Posted June 15, 2006 Author Posted June 15, 2006 Mine's De-Dion too ... could we have the same issue here I wonder?
nickdodo Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 Sorry, I know nothing about De-Dion, being a LA driver 😬 Nick in the (1987) 1700 X Flow...
David Lynch Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 Hope it's case of TADTS (they all do that Sir). Do you have an LSD fitted guys? Mine noisy but I've stopped worrying after 9,000 miles, a track day and 10 full tilt drag strip launches last week. Noise around corners or throttle lift off is bad. Never got any noisier though... 1.4K SS 😬 Photo's here
BenBear Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 David, No LSD or any other mind enhancers , but I'm beginning to think that you are right and maybe I'll stop worrying and wait till something goes bang and then I'll know what it is. Maybe as the De-Dion has more externally whirring bits, they tend to be more audible. 2.0 HPC Green/Yellow Stripe
Midnight Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 I have the same noise from the back of my Xflow dedion 7. Which I'd describe it as a sort of loose growling noise. Its been there since I built the car, which has now done over 40.000 miles so unless you're unlucky I don't think it will be too much to worry about.
Manxseven Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 my previous 7, a crossflow, used to whine and go form the rear end and pop and bang from the front end - it was great 😬 😬 😬 Caterham Fireblade here
SimB Posted June 16, 2006 Author Posted June 16, 2006 Sounds like it is a case of TADTS then! I have no LSD either (yet ). Midnight's 'loose growling noise' is a far better description than I originally used - sounds like the same noise. I only notice it when driving through town or stuck in traffic - better find some improved blatting routes to work where I can't hear it 😬. Thanks for the feedback!
john aston Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 I stopped worrying after the first five years- sounds ghastly, horrid growling interspersed with random snatches and jolts. But 50k miles - no worse, part of character etc
sjmmarsh Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 Are the prop-shaft UJs recently greased? They can get noisy and introduce some vibration if they dry out. Steve
ashaughnessy Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 My wife whines from the front end and pops and bangs from the rear end. Should I be worried?
Unclefester Posted June 20, 2006 Posted June 20, 2006 TADTS!!!!!! NICE PLATE!!! 😬 😬here *eek* Edited by - Unclefester on 20 Jun 2006 13:26:26
