Unclefester Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 Does anyone know what the spec is for FIA rollbars? Tube diameter, wall thickness, material type, type of welding approved? Or where I could find this info? A buddy of mine is going to make some for the 7 collection here, as it seems Caterham can't do one for a 1980 LA car, and if we make one we might as well do a pattern for the SV and the DD chassis as well..... *wink* NICE PLATE!!! 😬 😬here *eek*
Tom_C Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 It's in the MSA blue regs book and there is a bit here Cheers Tom FH54WLX - only the car supports ManU, honest! see here - UPDATED
Unclefester Posted June 14, 2006 Author Posted June 14, 2006 Thanks Tom! That was quicker than trying to find the Blue book which I know is lying about in some heap of clutter somewhere here....but would doubtless take days to find unless I got very lucky. Strange they dont spec the diameter/ wall thickness for the support bar or diagonal. I guess 32mm is ok. I think I'm right in thinking 50mm dia at 2mm wall is lighter than 45mm dia at 2.5mm wall thickness? OK my maths is carp.....maybe I should fire up te calculator....stop laughing you bounders!!! 😳 CDS not Moly....that's good news! I may be able to make up tasty bars for a good price here....they are about £220 from Caterhams aren't they? Don't worry, I wont be making them myself, wouldn't trust my welding and it's not my thing anyway, the guy who will do it is currently finishing an extremely trick Roman chariot, for a stunt team, has to be able to lose the right wheel at full belt without rolling, digging in, or otherwise killing the driver......it's got all the mechanism fitted, and has a retractable skid which springs into position as it loses the wheel. Fabulous thing, all in steel! (Apart from the Golden Eagle, with wings which actually act as wings, covering the wheels) He had a look at the Caterham standard bar on the SV today and said "PAH! Do it in me sleep....." *wink* NICE PLATE!!! 😬 😬here *eek* Edited by - Unclefester on 14 Jun 2006 21:16:23
Tom_C Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 I guess the details in the blue book are rather more involved, as my FIA approved cage has much smaller tubes than 50mm. You're right that a 50x2 will be slightly lighter than a 45x2.5, though I doubt there's much in it. Probably the critical bit is the attachment of the cage or bar to the chassis. I.Mupferit Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 If you don't want to go to the trouble of making a 'special', I believe Arch can supply an FIA rollbar to suit older chassis. Steve Motts (Se7enUp) has one on his car which has a 70's chassis (although you wouldn't guess it was that old from looking at it) Brent 2.3 DURATEC SV Reassuringly Expensive R 417.39 😬

Unclefester Posted June 15, 2006 Author Posted June 15, 2006 Ta Brent, I'll ring Arch anyway. NICE PLATE!!! 😬 😬here *eek*
