Normans_Ghost Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 Clive are you changing oil or going to the loo? 😬 These oils mix so you don't have to flush all the synthetic. I would but thats because I'm fussy with the oily bits. Can I ask why you're changing to mineral? Most go the other way. Cliff Richard Posted June 11, 2006 Author Posted June 11, 2006 norman, the problem i am having is the clutch slipping due to the oil getting to hot and i am told that by using either a semi or a mineral it can cure the problem. Clive. Clive the Blade here This is what my car sounds like!
Phil Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 The idea of the semi and fully synthetic oils is that they have a better cleaning/additives package keeping the oil together and the engine deposit free. The burnt oil and deposits cause varnishing and this stops lubrication on things like turbo bearings and hydraulic tappets to stick and tick when cold. Varnishing on a clutch will make it slip and not transmit the power. Going to a mineral base oil will increase the build up of deposits and possibly make the clutch worse. Most bikes run on 10w/40 semi synthetic oils and are SG spec, most car oils are now SJ and SL spec, all this means is that the oil has quality base crude used in manufacture, etc. A lot of mechanics know little about oil but a lot about engines, seak advice only from bike shops and good bike mechanics to get it right. If you are concerned go to a quality 10w40 semi but not a mineral. X/FLOW 1700 DD 1990 ROAD USE ONLY..SO FAR
blade_runner Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Clive both myself and seven_nut use Castrol r4 superbike fully synth, with no clutch problems, mine is a 160 bhp engine with a barnett carbon/kevlar clutch, seven_nuts car is a standard 919 with a dynojet kit and standard clutch, and he's had no issuewith it. are you sure your clutch is adjusted correctly? Cliff Richard Posted June 13, 2006 Author Posted June 13, 2006 bladerunner the clutch is a new barnett type i have adjusted it and i think i may have put a bit to much oil in so i have drained some out adjusted it and it now seems okay . a couple of people have told me that it has now most probably bedded itself in,i am going to try it at coombe on saturday and then do an oil and filter change and see how it goes Ta Clive.
