Mike Overend Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 Super Sprint 1700 Xflow (1991). Car is running well generally - however on two occasions recently when having to stop for a short period (i.e. less than 5 minutes) I have had difficulty re-starting and when it does fire up, a large cloud of grey/black smoke issues from the carburetters. Most alarming. Apart from this, once the engine is going again all appears well.?
Sootysevener Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 TADTS from time to time. Don't worry too much about smoke at start up but if it happens when running then either piston rings or valve stem seals are prime suspects. Make sure your carbs are properly balanced - often the problem is caused by fuel getting hot in the carbs whilst stopped. I open the throttle before starting hot to allow vapours to escape then start as normal with three pumps and hit the button. Check your plugs - are they dry and a nice brown shade or black / oily David 1989 1700XF SS clams with carbon webshots here
Mike Overend Posted June 12, 2006 Author Posted June 12, 2006 Thanks Dave Plugs are OK. Problem only occurs when engine is hot and I have reason to stop for a short time. It's OK from normal (cold) start and when running. However the quantity of smoke produced is large and not normal in my opinion - I'm getting Noble Motorsports to check it out on Thursday this week and then I'll report back!! (probably much poorer!!)
Unclefester Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 My TC does it from time to time......it looks worse than it is I reckon! Quite impressive for the kiddies, though..."chitty chitty bang bang"
Mike Overend Posted June 19, 2006 Author Posted June 19, 2006 New set of pressure regulation jets seems to have done the trick - £48 plus VAT and labour.
