I`ve looked at the many tyre threads,so excuse me if i`m repeating something obvious! Got my first 7 4 months ago, clad with 12yr old Eagle NCT`s(1400ss on Prisoners) that are obviously wooden. While i must admit its been ok as its kept my speeds down and they break away at the easiest opportunity,I`m after something better and got a price of 225 quid for 5 T1 R`s fitted. Are these suitable as a good start to having `proper` grip? And are the `888s` more of a trackday tyre? Thanks in anticipation....

Hi

Bin the NCTs.. apart from having no grip, there is a possibility that the tread will de-laminate, which could be errrrrr embarassing *mad* (You could use them for drifting practice or an autotest..)

You don't say what size rims you are running.. but I guess probably 15" as both the tyres you mention are common in that size. I have run YToyo T1S as a road tyre and they are OK - a big improvement on the NCT and well worth the upgrade.

If you are running a 13" or 14" wheel, a very good budget all rounder is the Yokohama A021 in 185/60 (or 185/70 if you want to look like a tractor). Avon CR500 are excellent, but expensive.

Other options are 'road legal track tyres' like the Yoko A048 or A032 and Toyo 888. Great on track and fine in warm weather. I had a few scary moments in cold damp conditions with them so have stuck to using T1S or A021 on the road, and slicks or A021 (if wet) on the track.

Many people are quite happy on 48's or 888's on the road.. depends on what you want to do.

One last thing... Bin the NCTs 😬

Have a set of TiS Proxes on 15" wheels for touring. Are excellent- not a huge amount of grip but very progressive; good in wet too.I also have aset of 48Rs for high days and holidays - obviousy different league in grip stakes but do wear out quickly.

I run 888s on the road and have done since September last year. They are great in the dry and even better when warmed up a bit. They are also excellent on track *thumbup*

It is always sensible to be very cautiuos in the wet driving a 7 with any tyres on and as my car is relatively low powered (1400ss approx 128bhp) I've had no really scary moments on wet roads as yet.

I like the 888s but couldn't say yet how long they are going to last. I've probably done about 1,000 miles on them so far including a day at Curborough and they've got loads of life left *thumbup*

DJT, I have just changed from A032's to R888's and am very happy with the swap. They are great in the dry and very good in the wet (they kept me on the road during the deluge at The Rumble). Haven't had them long enough to comment on tyre wear but I guess it depends how many miles you do. In 185/60*13 they cost £225 delivered from Camskill, I only do a couple of thousand miles a year so to be honest even if they only last 2 years I reckon it's a good investment. I never skimp on tyres, they are the only thing that keeps you on the road.

If you go this route I am sure you will be very happy with the change.

T1S have been excellent on Prisoner rims and T1R is the replacement tyre so you might expect it to be similar. Many sprinters are currently running Scudo Stunner tyres which are available in 195-50 r15 (or 195-45 r15 if yo want to go that bit lower).

Cheers folks, will prob go for the T1R`s this year as that will probably feel like a major upgrade after the NCT`s.At $35 (pc won`t do pound signs *confused*) for 195/50/15`s they seem good value. Thanks for the fast feedback *smile*

I've just got a pair of T1-Ss fitted on prisoners, and I'm very happy with them. Has been a pain getting them balanced though, make sure the fitter aligns the yellow dot to the valve (unless runout is a problem, see here here for details).

Just to be clear, this isn't a fault of the Toyo's, more lazy stupid tyre fitters *eek*

ohh, is it upgrade time? :)

Jerry,

Re your wifes MX5.

Have you tried running them at 28-29PSI, instead of the normal 26 PSI? It seems they have softer sidewalls than a lot of tyres and can take a bit more pressure.

I run Toyos on my 15 wheels and they are great, best upgrade I have to date, I am on my second set, good in all conditions. For what you want and such a good price, buy them, it will not be a waist of money and hard to beat without spending a lot more.

Most tyres work well on saloon cars but few on such a light car.

Another *thumbup* for the Toyo's. Been running the 888s on 13" rims for a while now.

Just had a look at my rears - and they are probably down to 3ish mm. Not entirely sure of the exact mileage I've put on them - it's not a huge amount, but I took a lot of tread off them on a hot-and-hard trackday (great clumps of rubber rolled off the tire).

I'll definitely buy another set when these wear out.

Took the plunge and ordered 5 T1 R`s at 225 fitted so will have to see for myself.I know there are better tyres out there, but i`m on a budget and new to 7`s so super sticky(therefore fast breakaway) are prob best left til next year...

Ged,

I have had them from 26 psi all the way up to 40 psi, now at about 36 psi.

There's no way I'll buy them again, the only time in my 30 years of driving that I've had the same feeling of 'float/looseness/imprecision' from a tyre was when I once had to fit a remould for a couple of days.

I've moved them from the rear to the front as they actually felt dangerous on the back, can't wait to wear them out, if I was better off I'd put them in the bin.

What the hell, 36 psi, I run 18 psi on the 7 and if I am going touring 20psi all round.

No wonder you have had problems.

DJT, add to your posting "what pressure" and see what the reaction is.
