Steering UJ

I have a 310 kit which was delivered at the end of October.

I have pretty much completed the build but have had to source a few missing parts myself to keep the process moving.

The one key part I am still missing is the steering UJ. Caterham cannot give me a date when one will be available, just saying they are being redesigned and it shouldn't be too long.

I'm not keen to book my PBC or IVA until I have this part.

I have tried to source one myself to no avail, does anyone know where I can get hold of one, or whether there is an appropriate alternative I can use.

Most options I have found are for 14mm diameter with 36 splines. For example https://www.carbuilder.com/uk/steering-universal-joint-forged I measured the O/D of my column at the splines and it is just over 15mm - not sure if the appropriate place to measure is O/D or from 'spline valley' to 'spline valley' which would likely be close to 14mm.

I have found this one on Rimmer Bros that 'looks' very similar to the caterham one. Out of stock but gives a part number that could be explored! Being a Truimph part its likely to fit!

Not sure I'd want to be an early adopter of such a redesigned part!

Maybe there is someone who can loan you theirs as many cars laid up for winter?

I did google the FAM1718 part number and it brought up images of an uprated version of the rubber disc type coupling used on Heralds as well, so may be prudent to call and check.

Also found this from a Danish webpage giving the spline details. I've checked for the Rallydesign part and it no longer exists.

  • 2 weeks later...

This is my first build, so I can't say whether it's new and improved or older and worse! Picture attached .. I've already installed it, so it's not a great view but hopefully it helps. It was supplied with 5/16 UNF bolds torqued to 25Nm which is different to the bolts and torque rating in the v2 IKEA manual. Keen to know what you think?

It's a metric chassis, not a metric car :).  Most of the suspension / steering fittings are still imperial.  You noticed it most around the dedion tube and uprights, which I suppose makes sense, it must saves having two upright designs, and at the time the metric chassis was launched they where still using spitfire calipers.  The imperial fitting that confuses me the most is the bolt that holds the expansion tank to the bracket.  This can only be imperial because someone hasn't been bothered to change the bolt pack.
