Two companies have recommendations of some sort in the archives:

I haven't used either of them, and I couldn't find any Club discounts.

I had an issue a couple of years back and used Speedy Cables for my VDO speedo , they were very good , but not the quickest or the cheapest

Jonathan,

I also used SpeedyCables for a repair and took the opportunity to re-calibrate as it was out by about 10% (at least it always showed a slower speed so no risk of going to fast where I shouldn't ....)

My cost was a little more due to the re-callibration - it's now reading bang on *smile*

I completed some basic measurements based on instructions on the website and did have to pay for recorded delivery to send it in.

Got an email saying what the total cost would be (not an estimate but final cost so if there were any unplanned issues they would contain within the quote) and whether I wanted them to proceed - the completion as mentioned by others was about 4-5 weeks.

This was in 2013 - cost was £80 for repair and recalibrate (+VAT) and with P&P came to £110.

I knew this was going to help someone... and it's me!

Rev counter suddenly became seriously underdamped. Emailed both repairers, got very rapid and helpful replies from both, and very similar quotes.

Just had it fixed by JDO on the logic of us needing independent repairers. Very pleased with the repair, the turnaround time and the communications. It did need a bit of fettling before I could refit it but nothing major.

Recommended.

PS: As usual with 7s the saga was actually slightly more intricate. I bought a preloved unit here as it was cheaper than the quotes for repair. But the wiring connector turned out to be different. Beware.

I had to use JDO Instruments to repair my speedo recently. Please with service and turnaround time.

Why did it need repairing? Well a bouncing speedo needle started the saga and I was all set to replace the speedo drive cable when the knurled nut on the back of the speedo refused to give, so what do you do, try harder....big mistake. The resultant torque from a pair of mole grips and my father-in-law counter reacting the instrument case resulted in this when opened up and photographed by JDO. JDO quoted...."We cannot believe how you managed to break the complete rear drive assembly !". It is only cheap die-cast structure and I presume riddled with cracks and porosity.

Repair and a required calibration arrived with them on Thursday pm and was back with me on Tuesday, effectively their 48hr premium service which they give you for free if they are not stacked-out.

JK..."What was kept from the original... face, needle and bezel?"

Yes, face, needle, bezel, and case and probably much of the gearing apart from any changes for the calibration....only the die cast 4 legged structure which also attaches the 'male' threaded cable mount and associated turning mechanism.

I used Speedograph Richfield a while ago to remake a cable for a Caterham instrument and a non standard right angle drive and then recently for a mechanical speedo recalibration, they turned them round in about 10 days and charged £75 for the recalibration.  Seem to be decent folk to deal with.

This is about mileometer rather than speedometer but this seemed like a good place to post......

Approaching 10,000 miles the mileometer was working fine, but on reaching 10,000 it stuck and won't go any higher.

Is this a common problem and is there an easy fix?

Take a look at JDO website, a standard repair is £100 plus P&P for return postage. They charge a fixed fee for any repair, it would appear. You can call John Ostick at JDO for guidance, anticipate the conversation will be "no problem send it in and we will fix it".....Yorkshire man who knows what he is talking about if you get the picture.
