Quick Query re: removing gearbox with engine

Am I right in thinking that these 2 bolts are the lower fixings for the gbox mount.  Once the speedo drive and reverse light are disconnected all that holds the box in is these 2 fixings?  Can I just undo the nuts from below to release the gbox or is there anything else to be undone?

Yes but it's possibly easier to undo the large bolt inside the mount and leave the mount in place.

Don't forget that when you tip the gearbox to lift the engine out, the gearbox oil with come out of the tail shift... be prepared with a cloth or bucket to save a lot of mess!

the reverse switch is easily damaged so I now remove it - leave one of the engine mount bolts in but lose, undo the gearbox mount and slide the box over and the switch will come out.

the two nuts you can see are on bolts so you will need to get something on the head. I have fitted socket head allen bolts so I can use a key rather than a spanner.

Thanks all.  I've removed the tunnel cover, but couldn't see the bolt inside the mount - I'll have another look in the light.

I was also thinking of draining the gbox oil (Type 9 5spd) but I suspect that the easiest way to drain the oil is to tilt the gbox when removing!

I think I'll be ordering a lot of socket head bolts when I rebuild...

The two gearbox mount fixings on a 1999 car are 5/16" x 1" setscrews (later cars have M8 x 25).  To undo, use two sockets, one above (slim fingers help) and one below.  The central mount is fixed to the gearbox tail with a M12 x 25 setscrew.

Re draining, there won't be a drain plug on a standard Type 9 so you'll need a pump of some sort (such as a Pela).

Btw, do you have an Assembly Guide for your car?  If you'd like one in PDF (1996 edition, which came with my 1999 1.8K kit) message me your email address.

Thank you.

I have the Assembly Guide, Owner's Handbook (that came with the car) and De Dion Parts Catalogue, all of which I would have bought around the time I bought the car in 2000.

Others have also kindly sent me various PDF guides too.

Are the Pela pumps the recommended option?  If so, then I assume just the smallest one will do?

From memory, on a 5 speed it's very easy to simply remove the top cover plate if you want to suck the oil out with a Pela pump

My mention of the big bolt inside the gearbox mount, is only accessible from underneath the car and is much easier to remove than the two small bolts that hold the mount to the chassis. When you have removed the big bolt, and lifting the engine/gearbox assembly out, you will have to lift the tail of the box slightly so that the box comes out of the mounting plate. It's pretty obvious when you do the job

I wish there were more pictures in the Assembly Guide of the underside of the car!  Nick, am I right in thinking that the bolt head is accessible through the hole in the chassis plate between the nuts in my pic?  And that the bolt just screws into the gbox?  So I just undo that bolt leaving the mount attached to the chassis?
