Eriedor
About to replace the rear main seal on my k series.Wanted to check, should I put oil on inner lip of the seal/crank and sealant on the outer edge? I've found mixed information when researching this.Any other advice for this job?
timb2117
I got a cheap and cheerful slide hammer after reading the horror stories herein about removal, warmed up the seal and locked in the collar that removes it as tight as possible, (and of course wd40) hey presto she came out a breeze.Refitting cant remember what I put on think it was just a bit of oil, chilled the seal overnight and warmed up the crank mating surface then carefully popped it in. Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted July 5, 2022 Leadership Team Share Posted July 5, 2022 No oil needed. Ensure it's dry and clean and apply a bead of RTV sealant around the inside of the flange, then apply pressure to the seal for 24hrs to allow it to set fully. It's also common on higher performance engines to drill and tap the seal and block to accommodate two small c/sunk retaining screws, belt and braces!Stu. oilyhands
Make sure you use a reliable seal, if it is gold coloured then reject it as they are dimensionally unsound and will harden and leak. I have a clamp here that can hold the seal in place while the RTV sets that you could borrow if you need, although oil isnt a requirement. It is sometimes easier to slide the seal into place with a little oil on the chamfer of the crank flange and the inside of the lip seal. If you cant find a reliable seal, I keep them in stock.Oily
Eriedor
Mine is gold so no good?To clarify, I put the RTV on the outer lip of the back of the seal (in red)?
oilyhands
IMHO that seal is a duffer. The positioning of the RTV is bang on though.Oily
