Hundred thousand mile Caterham? Has anyone been round the clock?

I was just looking on YT and there was a pick up in America with 249K miles on the odometer.  No big deal.

It got me thinking.  Who owns the highest mile 7?

Anyone up to 200k miles?!

A mere 102k miles here on original k-series engine. Plenty more high milers above me.

136,000 or so one mine.

And in the 100,000+ mile club:-  Oliver S, Angus D, probably Debbie S, probably Mark O

Out of interest - above 100,000 miles do maintenance costs increase?

Does reliability become an issue?

Are there any Sigma-engined cars at that mileage or are these all older cars?

Tim.

"man maths", I haven't compared costs early in the car's life with those now.  Use has varied, I used to drive it a lot more, nor I haven't tracked inflation.

I should add that obtaining decent quality ancillaries becomes difficult. Once my original alternator failed, the replacements are increasingly unreliable.

Then a lot of bits are very firmly in place having been in situ for years, so reluctant to move.

I'm well over 200k - close to 250k at a guess..

I bought it on 50k and ran it for 4-5 years as my company car doing 30-40k per annum hence the mileag.  At that point I started to compete in it and use it less - probably 10k per annum driving it to/ from sprints, at weekends  and track days etc for 3-4 years. At that point it was pretty reliable.

Since around 2015 when I rebuilt the car I've used it fairly exclusively for sprints covering minimal mileage - it's at this point the reliability dropped!

I've rebuilt the car/ chassis/ engine over the last couple of years to bring it finally back to as close to new as I can and hope it will last another good period.

It is/ was and will be used in all weathers, never a garage queen... Maintenance when it's used regularly is cheaper than a normal road car being honest.

My old car M17 has over 100k but it is a Trigger's broom with a new chassis (after a collision), 3rd K series, 2nd gearbox (though it turned out to be the propshaft that was the problem Rolleyes ), 2nd de Dion, Prisoners sold on, new wings, new seats...  We think the rear calipers are original!

Steve Shaw's "Eugene" is high on the list as well, but nothing comes close to Danny's car AFAIK.

Tony - the only bits left of the original car now at a guess are:

De-dion tube, Rear Callipers, radius arms (not bushes), steering UJ and rod, clutch pedal, 'some' of the wiring loom, bellhousing, propshaft (not UJ's), header tank... I think that's about it...

That's the spirit! Thumbup

It warms the heart to hear of owners using their cars properly. Looking through the classified ads on Pistonheads & the like, it's amazing how many Sevens for sale have just a couple of thousand miles on the clock.

I'm not in the same league as the people on this thread, but I did manage 45,000 miles in my last Caterham & 15,000 so far in the current one. Must try harder! I have a European trip planned for later this year, so I'm doing my best! Biglaugh
