Emerald ECU v Rover

All,

Before i invest in an Emerald ECU, i would like to ask if the existing Rover unit can be reprogrammed to suit revised cams/induction.

I have seen Revilla's articles and if the Rover mems has now been unlocked, would happily save hundreds of pounds.

Having said that, i know the Emerald system has numerous maps and has been extensively tested and would therefore be a simpler choice.

I suppose my question is, are their sufficient tuning companies adjusting the rover ECU or should i go with the Emerald as it is "known" to more tuners.

If your car has EU3Mems there are places to do this. I had my 2001 1.8k roadsport remapped by Kmaps following fitment of 633 cams and verniers by DVA and a Powerspeed 421 manifold/exhaust. Simple and inexpensive process with Kmaps, the above work transformed the cars drivability, efficiency, and level of fun.

I believe with Revilla's work, you can do the mapping yourself, or likely find others to do it for you.

I'm not sure the Rover Mems is suited to fitment of throttle bodies.

EU2 has distributor arrangement on the back of the engine and a single coil bolted to the RHS of the engine. EU3 has 2 coil packs on the rocker cover - no distributor.

There is a guy on Instagram called rovermems_com (who Andrew knows) who has done a lot of similar work to Andrew delving into the programming of the EU2 unit.

Largely echoing the above ...

MEMS3 can be remapped to cope with cam changes, head work etc. and if you want to change the driving characteristics of your car. So long as you're still using a plenum induction system it seems to cope with a lot of change and works very well. I've seen cars that have been mapped on the rollers using my software and at least one of them is now doing very well in competition.

If you want to go to throttle bodies, it's not so clear cut. I would originally have said MEMS3 won't handle it, but I recently spoke to someone from one of the MG ZR race series, and he says all of their cars are on throttle bodies, running standard MEMS3 with vacuum takeoff pipes to a collector with a common MAP sensor with no problems at all.

However ... driveability standards between race cars road cars may be a bit different so his idea of no problems may not match up to expectations of manners on the road.

I did mess around with my own car disconnecting the MAP sensor and trying to tune the tables it uses to estimate MAP when it doesn't have a sensible sensor reading, to see if I could get it effectively running throttle angle. I was surprised by how well it did actually run, but it wasn't as driveable as it should have been, it was very harsh closing the throttle suddenly etc.

If you've got an earlier MEMS unit, they're not remappable as standard. They need modified electronics to allow remapping. James Portman at rovermems.com has done a lot of work on developing some modules that go into theses ECUs to support programming.
