I evaluate to convert to a Mazda gearbox. Is any experience what it takes to install a mazda gearobox. I have come so far that I would need a new bellhouse and a shorter propshaft with a maxda slip yoke, modify the tunnel, and the metal part between the gearbox and propshaft, a gear lever. but does it really fit?? rear mount??
thks for feedback

That's interesting, Hanns Per.
Nothing to contribute, i"m afraid, but I'm curious about the torque capacity of the Mazda gearbox. Is it sufficient to handle CSR260 torques?
James
The Caterham supplied Mazda box has a different casing which I believe alters the cant (angle) of the box to engine and is also smaller to fit the tunnel. I've seen the Caterham gearboxes being stripped and re-assembled at this company....

An easier and better option is a full alloy cased needle roller type 9
Better ratios (you have a choice)
Higher torque capacity
Higher sustained rpm capacity
Lighter

I have the semi helical T9 box but I find it quite loud up to 3rd its fo touring I sit up to 8 hrs in the car. On my uprated T9 gearbox I do not like the backlash and I am not confident if it copes well with the 250 - 260 hp of a 2.4 Duratec in the long run.
what I found out is that it copes with 50% more power than the upraeted T9 box?
The CSR chassis was redesigned to fit the Mazda box, the tunnel is to tight to fit the Mazda box. I 'm not sure you will get away with stretching it as we did when the first ones were fitted to the S3 and SV cars.
What is the uprated T9 you refer too, assume this is a different box to the Tracsport Semi Heli ....?
Have you considered noise insulation in the tunnel...?
Steve offers a touring ratio set, standard helix on the gears, ratios with than the semi heli but better than a stock box

Surely the European 485 cars have the mazda box, it's a csr chassis

Yes, there are two considerations here: will it fit, and is it strong enough?
Mic's earlier response confirms that the original CSR chassis had to be modified so that the Mazda box will fit (for the later European 485 versions), and he went on to say that it would be a bit of a stretch to stretch the original CSR frame to take the box. So possibly ruled out (unless chassis mods are carried out) on the "does it fit?" criterion.
And then the strength issue. The CSR 260 has around 33% more torquey-things than the European 485 (272Nm vs 206Nm) so that question remains unanswered at this stage.
A bit of a challenge, methinks...
