Coolant air lock

Nick, hi.

Get some extra length hose to connect the Tee to, that way you can raise the Tee higher than any other part of the cooling system and gently top up with a jug. (and put a spot of copper slip on the cap thread as it will be too tight to undo next time)

Also!!! don't pull too much on the hose that goes down the side of the engine as it's joined with a straight plastic coupling which can snap. (don't ask how I know) *silly*

That is a great couple of ideas and lessons Learnt!!!!

I am off to France tomorrow and the swearing to try and top up the coolant could be heard in the next road I am sure. Tee ordered and being delviered next week.

So a flush and re fill next weekend should be SO easy now!!!

Thanks again

Nic, same as Rog, I have a bleed tee fitted in the bypass hose to the rear of the engine and I've cable tied it to the dry sump tower to make sure it's at the highest point possible.

When I fill the system I add all the coolant via the bleed tee with both the expansion cap and the plug on the top corner of the radiator removed. When the radiator is full I replace the plug, then when the expansion tank is up to level I refit the cap. I then carry on filling until it's backing up in the bleed tee, works every time and although it isn't the fastest way to fill the system I never have trouble with airlocks. A small hole drilled in the thermostat is a must-do as well.

Stu.

  • 2 weeks later...

old coolant dropped, system flushed - then used a rad flush with water - so for so good. Let it all cool down and drained and flushed again. - Tee bleed valve installed as described and filled again as described AND most importantly it worked!!!!! thanks - now just need to take it for a run at some point to double check, but all seem great
