Dan R
Has anyone successfully modified the plastic wind deflector behind the radiator of some models in order to improve access to the oil cap on the dry sump tank to enable easier oil level checking? 7 wonders of the world
All you need is a suitably sized hole in order to look thro.... mark it up and cut it, a Q Max cutter will give a nice finish.
Dan R
Ahhh, so still removing the cap with the plastic in place, rather than remodeling the plastic to be able to reach the cap from above?
Leadership Team Shortshift Posted December 4, 2022 Leadership Team Share Posted December 4, 2022 Mine is sufficiently flexible to allow access to the cap with the tongue still in place. In fact, the trailing edge of the tongue sort of 'latches' below the lip of the filler and is held out of the way during oil filling and level checking.James
Dan R
Thats interesting, and very handy! Mine is, as you can see, completely different which makes oil checking and filling much more difficult. So far i think the 2 options are as 7 Wonders has suggested to cut an inspection window in it, but this is on the assumption that i can remove the cap with it in place (Which admittedly ive not attempted yet), or alternatively to cut the tongue wide enough to access the whole cap in a large U shape. Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted December 4, 2022 Leadership Team Share Posted December 4, 2022 Mine's a K-Series and I've no experience of Duratec engines, but can I ask why when topping up you need to fill the oil directly into the d/s tank rather than the standard engine top filler?Stu. Hampshire West AR
It's the oil check that is a pain on my R500. As you say you can add oil at the top of the engine. I am worried about cutting the tongue so will look for better fasteners that come apart easier. Was think of the ones that have a centre part that you screw out and then the outer pulls out easily like the wheel arch liner mounts. No idea what their proper name is? Dan R
You are quite right that filling through the engine top filler is possible, however without checking the oil level in the DS tank its impossible to know if you need to fill or not due to lack of dipstick. Dan R
#10 Does yours 'Give' enough to remove the cap from underneath it? then potentially only needing to cut a window in the tongue as mentioned before? Im wondering if there are any other QR fasteners that are in ally or similar rather than plastic, for longevity
Dan R
These look to be an ideal solution but im unsure they will be available in the right size. These are from an undertray kit for an Exige. If anyone knows of anywhere that can supply something like this it would be handy!
Hampshire West AR
Dan, Caterham sell a dip stick as does some other unmentionable outfit. I made one up using a kebab skewer and a plastic top which I can use by bending the tongue. Would really like measurements off the Caterham one to verify my low/high marks. 7 wonders of the world
There looks to be sufficient room to remove the cap so with a hole you can see in the top thro the mesh and view the level with the engine running a dipstick is not required if you can see into the tank.Alternatively use the better designed round tank and locate on the end of the passenger footwell.
