So are you saying Bilsteins fitted USD won't reduce unsprung weight, or are you saying they shouldn't be USD for other reasons?
My understanding is that Bilsteins function perfectly fine whichever way up.

When the club was shown the Caterham Technology Centre, I remember them showing the Bilstein development for the 160.  At the time they said all Caterham shocks where mono tube, because the variance from a twin tube found in normal road car shock would be unacceptable give the weight of the vehicle.   They even had one disassembled and showed its components and how the valves where changed for the 160.

Do you know how to tell if the Bilstein fitted is mono or twin?

Unless they have changed spec the standard ones were twin tube with the race models being monotube.

I checked with Bilstien when I ran them giving them the part number etc to make sure this was in 2006 so it's possible they have..?

Basically it's operational, as it's possible to get a cavity in the oil which results in loss of damping in a small portion of the stroke.
