Battery has died
Hi all, I'm looking for a replacement for my Red Top 30 Varley battery. The Varley seems to be rather expensive and heavy so I would like to consider something different, the issue I have is that the cage for the Varley has been riveted very firmly down and I don't fancy drilling them all out! Would anyone know of any other options still using the Varley cage? Or am I best to just get another? I would post a picture or 2, but I've no idea how to add them??? Thanks

A running thread on the best batteries for Sevens.

What are the dimensions of the cage, please?

"I would post a picture or 2, but I've no idea how to add them???"

There are three ways of posting images: two by uploading them to this site, and one by linking to them on another site eg Dropbox. They're all described in the Forum User Guide:

Most Members now use the shortcut upload:

That's quick and comparatively easy, but it does limit the resolution of the image.
Not usually a problem for photos but can be for screen dumps, images of documents etc.

The other two methods don't have that limitation.

Please let me know if you need any help or want to practise.

Thanks, I just needed to change to desk top view.

My battery is a Red Top 30 and it fits very snugly in the cage. Mine has female connections, but the male connection battery looks to be cheaper, so I guess that might be an option? Cheaper still using the discounts available from here.

That is an excessive array of rivets and completely over the top. Mr I K Brunel would be pleased !

Yes it does seem rather excessive, I don't really want to go through the pain of removing them all!

Gosh. Varley batteries are expensive. I know it's not much help to you as yours is the bigger Red Top 30, but for someone looking to replace a Red Top 25 the Lucas one is worth considering HERE

It might be worth changing the tray. You could get the new tray and Lucas battery and still have a lot of change in your pocket. Drilling out the rivets on the tray should only be a few minutes of a job.

I thought 2020 was the year that was going to give me all I wanted. It turned out to be the year to make me appreciate what I've got.

Yes, they're expensive.

As you can see in the battery thread I recommend a sealed AGM battery for most uses of most Sevens (if you're not making the jump(!) to lithium).

In your position I'd be looking at a Varley Red Top (which are all AGM type) that you know will fit or a Powervamp/ Odyssey where you've checked the dimensions. The latter will probably be cheaper.

On Varley Red Tops are these screw-in adaptors, or do you have to buy the correct battery?

Thanks

You can order 2 different types of Varley, one with a male connector and one with a female connector, for some reason the female connection type are more expensive.

I will have a look at those other brands of battery and see if I can find one that's roughly the same size.
