Visible smoke test MOT in Coventry or Warks areas

My 89 amateur built Caterham is due its MOT, and its emissions should be tested as visible smoke test only.

Up till now, I've been using Roman Garage in Stratford, who understood these things, but unfortunately Robin has retired so I need to find somewhere else.

I've been recommended a couple of local garages by some of the local kit car owners, but when going for a pre-emptive chat with them they don't know what I'm talking about.

Can anyone recommend an MOT station that knows about amateur build cars and visible smoke tests without having to have a major discussion about it? Preferably Coventry or North Warks area?

Thanks

I use the test centre in Stoney Stanton.

You should be able to download the attached which klists the requirements by vehicle and as long as your chassis matches the Caterham bit any MOT tester should acknowledge the smoke test only.

I use a garage in my village in Worcestershire (Sunnyside Garage, Kempsey) , but probably a bit far away for you

Kind regards

I had the same issue last year. If your VIN has a K prefix then you'll be fine. If not, then it'll be problematic as was mine. Search for a thread started by me and you should find the relevant information. I'm close by in Rugby and ultimately had success.. Good luck.

A garage local to me (Balsall Common, walking distance for me - very convenient) passed my 1997 K series car only last week (while I waited) without any issues.  I didn't get an emissions readout which presumably means they didn't test it so they might be a possible solution for you, depending on your location.

Thanks for the replies and the messages. That gives me a couple of places to contact and fingers crossed they are familiar with the regs.

The DVSA exhaust emissions pdf linked to above doesn't appear to cover my car. Being pre 1990, or whenever Caterham swapped to the standard 17 digit VIN number, my number is a different format. Its the old, shorter style, starting "KLC", which means it is a kit supplied car but unfortunately the MOT stations round here don't seem to know the regs for it to make a difference in testing.

 Thanks.

MOT testing manual section 8.2 states:

For emissions purposes only you should treat the following as first used before 1 August 1975:

  • kit cars and amateur-built vehicles first used before 1 August 1998
  • Wankel rotary-engined vehicles first used before 1 August 1987
  • Q plated vehicles

Your car should also meet the other criteria - no cat & pre SVA. So a visual test is all that is required.
