A Tesla S battery weighs pretty much the same as a new Caterham. 540KG vs +-545KG.
A Tesla S weighs 2.2 Metric Tons. Four Caterham's. Then we have the energy required and environmental damage expended to construct such a material rich behemoth.
I propose it's all a load of stinking politically driven pooh but what do I know?! Save nuclear, we still need to burn carbon rich energy to provide the power to charge the Tesla and all EV's. It's just 3D chess.
Put that in your pipe, smoke it and discuss!
Footnote - I've not had a decent game of chess in years. What a fantastic game of strategy that is. I just go steaming in and see what happens. Much more fun!

So how much does a comparable ICE car weigh? Check out the weight of, say, a Jaguar
Sure, we still burn gas to make electricity but right now (with not much solar going on that I can see) 35% is from renewables (wind, solar) and 16% from Nuclear. Less than half from gas/coal and that proportion is improving all the time.

And large scale generation is significantly more efficient that an internal combustion engine.

BTW: During the recent Tesla Investors day, there was a claim that they had found a way to reduce the cost of production of their batteries.

What happens to the batteries when the reach the end of their life? Stewart
Someone has a good day weighing in scrap ,
derek
I suspect that , such is the visceral dislike some have for electric cars, it is not the battery weight , nor the energy cost in production , but simply the fact that they exist at all. Not every ICE car sounds, nor behaves like it has a DFV or a smallblock Chevy in the engine room and most daily driver car engines are so refined , and lacking in character that they as may well be powered by leccy , hydrogen or unicorn tears.
Without direct information, I would expect them to go into power walls (after all they do make them too), that is where those from Renault UK go. https://www.powervault.co.uk/

"... but simply the fact that they exist at all."
Yep, spot on!
We all know car manufacturers make their money lending to buyers from their own banks. The more expensive the car the more money is made. VW Group have stopped making CityGos petrol models, Skodas version of the Up!. They are all electric now, and the price has gone from £10K to £18K.
