Stu, I nearly had the Congleton link road in my back garden, hopefully they'll go with the new route they produced after we had a consultation session with Council which is a couple of hundreds of yards further away.
Hopefully get some compo out of them.
As for HS2, I never use the train now so very little chance of using it in the future.

And... How do we propose to improve the rail network to introduce newer faster trains on the current live lines? Average working time at night tends to be 4 hours max.. Anything more and those lovely commuters whine like b*stards that they've been inconvenienced and train operators rape Network rail for delay costs..we work at weekends and.. The nimbys complain that we disturb them. I'm sure that you lovely clever clued up chaps have all the answers... So tell us... How would you do it? Build new.. Taking much less time and money... Or disrupt trains, locals and take 50% or so longer and more money... You clever whining chaps obviously know far more than i on how to engineer a solution..
Why does it take two hours for me to get to Bham International tomorrow morning on the train? It's 100 miles, suggesting an average speed of 50mph! Whether hs2 is an answer I don't know, but that's a slow train!
To pursue Dannyboy's point. There have been a lot of studies on how to get more capacity on the West Coast Main Line without HS2. This is the most accessible and it includes references to the big Atkins report. None of them hold up. Trying to do piecemeal improvements would cause enormous disruption and still get nowhere near the desired capacity. It's much better to build a new dedicated high-speed line and use the old route for local, regional and freight traffic.

If I understand the new report they are proposing:
* Simultaneous start of work on London to Birmingham, and some parts north of Birmingham.
* No connection between HS1 at St Pancras and HS2 at Euston
* Review of options for Heathrow.

I wonder if they can build a little shuttle train, like airports have?

The distance is less than that between many airport terminals but then you've often got rid of luggage in airports by then. There is a big brick building in the way...
AMENDED: Here's the study with pictures of APMs in other cities.
