Covid-19 and Blatting - Updated statement from Club (4 July 2020)

* * *   Updated 04 July 2020   * * *

The Club remains committed to following and passing on the latest advice from the UK Government (and other bodies) on driving, attending events etc., that may be pertinent to our members.

As responsible adults, we can exercise our own judgement with regards driving our 7s (and 21s)… but we still ask that members avoid actions that might as a group create the wrong impression or, at worst, go against rules that we in the Club have all worked so hard not to break.

General guidance – as with the original previous advice that we posted on 29 May, this latest update is again based on an update being circulated around car clubs by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs and other car enthusiast clubs.

The government’s latest advice has been updated, with new rules from 4 July 2020. Different restrictions exist in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, so members in all areas should check for the official guidance in their particular region.

Public gatherings of more than 30 people are still prohibited in law and there are heavy penalties in place for those that ignore the rules. Guidelines still urge us to avoid meetings of more than 6 people from different households in an outdoor space and two households indoors. This makes it almost impossible for the Club to currently arrange events, even monthly get-togethers, in a safe and legal manner.

Furthermore, all cafés, restaurants and pubs that reopen will be heavily enforcing social distancing. Many venues will be operating a pre-book only policy and all venues will be required to record the personal details of anyone entering their premises.

Despite there being a difference between our proper MSUK-compliant events and our Club’s own regular and organised events in the Club’s social calendar, we cannot responsibly organise Club group drives (Blats) or get-togethers without introducing strict control of numbers, traceable contact data collection, pre-booking and maybe even participant temperature testing.

For this reason, along with all the other social distancing and public gathering rules, the Club’s interim management team will NOT be resuming official activities, physical monthly meets, organised road runs or any other general social activities at this time.

While we understand that Lotus and Caterham 7 or 21 drivers want to start using their vehicles, either individually or in small groups, the Club will not help or facilitate such ‘blats’ via its website, forum or other social media mechanisms that it runs on behalf of its members. By all means, use and enjoy your vehicles – but do so individually or in small self-organised groups which do not involve the Club physically or legally please.

As the UK starts to gradually emerge from isolation, many people are back driving for the first time in months and driving standards are noticeably lower. You may be fine driving, but ‘allowing for third-party actions’ and ‘spirited driving’ are not yet comfortable bed fellows. Please use common sense if going out for blats and drive with caution, as lockdown measures could very quickly return following a second spike if social distancing guidelines are not followed rigidly.

From 4 July, the following guidance will apply in England – Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have issued their own rules:

  • you can meet in groups of up to 2 households in any location - public or private, indoors or outdoors, but should socially distance from anyone not in your household or bubble.
  • when you are outside, you can continue to meet in groups of up to 6 people from different households, following social distancing guidelines
  • it is against the law to gather in groups larger than 30 people, except for a limited set of circumstances to be set out in law. Police will have the power to break up groups larger than 30, apart from these exceptions
  • you must not interact socially with anyone outside the group you attending external locations with, even if you see other people you know, for example, in a restaurant, community centre or place of worship
  • try to limit the number of people you see, especially over short periods of time, to keep you and them safe, and save lives - the more people you have interactions with, the more chances we give the virus to spread

Key points:

  • The pandemic is NOT over. The lives of our families and friends are still at risk.
  • Maintain social distancing of 2m. (1m+ in certain circumstances - refer to official guidelines).
  • Check your vehicle over carefully if it’s not been used for a while, paying particular attention to tyres and brakes.
  • If you previously declared your 7 or 21 as being on SORN to the DVLA, be sure to unSORN it before taking to the road.
  • If you didn’t renew your insurance policy during lockdown, do it right away.
  • If your vehicle needs one, do you have an MOT?
  • Due to variations in advised travel distances in different countries, check before crossing national borders
  • If you begin to display any new symptoms. Please self-isolate immediately and consult the NHS advice below.

Please adhere to these guidelines to protect the health of yourself and others. As we stated previously, please be assured that we are monitoring advice very closely and will follow up with Club members as and when the situation develops.

It is Clive, but Giles and Brian have put the vast majority of the work into it hence they've posted it, I know it took a lot of time.
