Book Update - The Greatest Escape

I hope the admins don't mind.....

Along with the website for my book (www.thegreatestescape.co.uk) there is now a dedicated Facebook, Twitter feed (@HalifaxJB869) and TikTok page(greatestescape) with some new video promos going up shortly. I am also about to sign with a PR Company who will be actively promoting my book plus I am working with them on a national and regional press plan including specialist mags. The website contains a 'register now' section for anyone who would like to provide an email address and I will let them know when the book is close to release (£19.99 hardback published by Pen & Sword books).

Well there we have it.. The cover is approved (see below), I have signed off on the editors draft of the text and am just going over the typesetters page proofs. After that it's just the Index to do and then it's all done ! Many people have helped with info and support along the way and there's a fairly lengthy 'Acknowledgments' section in the book (and rightly so). It was a privilege to be able to write this book and, said in all humility, I am immensely proud of this piece of work. I finally delivered on the promise that I made to the relatives of my Dad's and his crew over the years that once I had the missing piece of the jigsaw that I would make sure their story was told.

I hope I've done you all proud: Bernard Happold, Harry Barratt, John Brownlie, Gordon Bowles, John Baxter , Duncan McGregor and Tommy Jones. A true 'Band of Brothers'.

Many people on here have been supportive of the project and I thank you. The book is out in time for the 80th Anniversary of that final fateful raid on 5th May 1943.

Have been following your posts and look forward to the book being published - very well done.  Clap

Whilst (fashionably?) late to the party, I recently started listening to Al Murray and James Holland's We Have Ways of Making You Talk podcast - bet they'd love to review the book and talk to you about it!

Martin. I've just been looking at your web site for the book and it looks great. I am also keen to read it on release.

Just out of interest, I looked at the picture of the radio operator. He is sitting in front of a Marconi 1154 transmitter and to the left, fitted vertically, is the Marconi 1155 receiver. I've had one of these in the loft since I was 17 and have never got round to having it rebuild. It used to work as I used it to practice morse code when at marine radio college in Southampton many years ago. I am still a radio ham today, but really do nothing on the air now.
On a recent 7 outing to the Battle of Britain Museum at Hawkinge, I offered to give the 1155 to the museum. The reply I got from the  man who runs it was so unfriendly and down right snotty, I instantly changed my mind and will not give it to them. They are worth a few pounds, so more fool them.

Like you, my father was " in the bag" and never spoke about it, till it was too late. For me, it is lost history and my children have only a passing interest. So what you have done is very commendable and I salute you for all the hours you have put in to produce a wonderful book about your father.

Hi Piers

Thanks for the reply - that's very disappointing to hear about the receiver and the way you were spoken to. Hawkinge is in the book actually as my father and his crew had to set down there after their first raid (feathered the prop on a troublesome engine 25 mins before bombing).

Hi all

Just a quick update - the book is now on the publishers website and they have posted that it is a preorder bestseller.

I can't promise tales of fights in the kitchen or broken necklaces like the other Harry's book but with this Harry (my late father) I can Ieast least promise an insight into life and death in Bomber Command at the height of the air battle in 1943 and his life (and escapes) as a POW. Please note that I am donating a percentage of my share of royalties from the book to the RAF Benevolent Fund and their work on Mental Health support. It's in memory of dad and his crew and I think he would have given me a rare nod of approval were he still around bless him.

Brilliant and well done getting this out there. Not my sort of thing but I wish you the best of luck.
