Bilbao to Barcelona

Thinking about a trip to Sardinia which will include a leg from Bilbao to Barcelona.

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good route between these two places - possible taking in some of the Pyrenees?

Thanks in advance. Garth

With a bit of stretching could that include the Picos de Europa? Many happy trips in the archives around there...

If you want some walking on the way I also recommend Ordesa.

Thanks JK - have spent many happy days in the Picos! Trying to minimise the driving time to Sardinia. We drove to Sardinia last year and had a fantastic time once there, but the drive there and back through France was just a bit long!

Why not look at some Tour de France or Vuelta a Espana routes?  Both will visit the Pyrenees every year and love a mountain climb. Both use both sides of the border occasionally.

The N260 is a decent route across the south side of the Pyrenees, it's a major A-road in places but nice and twisty for some decent stretches. I've done it a couple of times on the bike and on one trip did venture off the road to find the smaller older roads ... that turned into a nightmare of broken non-maintained minor roads that have been forgotten as the N260 has been improved, "okay" on a big adventure bike but wouldn't be ideal in a 7.

Depending on how long you want to take, diverting up to Biescas to pick up the N260a is worthwhile, and also an overnight stop in Ainsa. We've stayed a couple of times at the Hotel Posada Real just off the main square in the old part of Ainsa, being on bikes we just parked them down the alley at the side of the hotel, maybe worth assessing parking for the 7 though.

Oh, and unless it's covered in snow, Andorra is a dump.

Garth - have a look at #272 here...

This was a long trip we did in 2018 - northern Spain, Portugal, back into Spain, into and up through France.

I believe you redid some if it with Hedge a few years later.  The bit from northern Spain into the Pyrenees was one of my favourites and a variation might work for you.

If you do follow that route, you'll go through a small village called Banca.  If you do, could you take a photo of the sign as you enter the village for me please?  (long story...!)
