Another great film of 2014- Calvary. Imagine Twin Peaks combined with Under MiIk Wood set in Eire and you're close. Dry as a bone funny , bleak as hell and - no spoilers- the ending is shattering .

We watched the 1999 version of "An Ideal Husband" last night. By coincidence it's on BBC2 at 1300 today. It's a good film, and if you're not sure about Wilde* it's an excellent place to start. Jonathan * As opposed to the reverse.

Saw The Double this weekend, worth a watch if you enjoy something a bit different.

Frank-funny , weird , inspired by the legendary Frank Sidebottom and acted beautifully by Michael Fassbinder. If you liked Beefheart or Barrett you will like this

I saw Calvary last night. Maybe you need to be Irish or Catholic (or both) to understand the community it portrays. I thought The Guard portrayed the communities I have been to in the west of Ireland better. (but a visitor may not see everything which lies underneath) Edited by - Golf Juliet Tango on 25 May 2014 23:37:50

"A Cock and Bull Story" tonight 2330, BBC2. A thoroughly appropriate way to celebrate Tristram Shandy. Jonathan

If you like art house film . preferably subtitled, then can I recommend "Of Horses and Men" ? An Icelandic film which is disturbing and funny in equal measure. Weird locals and their extraordinary affinity with the horses of the area- which is a stunningly beuatiful valley somewhere in deepest Iceland . I am no big fan of horses (unlike most of my family) but they are the real stars here- the most beautiful creatures, several of whom come to a rather sticky end. Not for the squeamish or the prude \" class=\"smiley\" />

Could I offer up Filth with James McEvoy as a very amusing, more North of the Watford Gap kind of lock-stock-two-smoking-c*cks kind of a flick...... People sitting near me on my flight to Mumbai must have thought I was insane, but it's quite topically funny!\" class=\"smiley\" />
