There's an owner of a 1960s Classic Mini doing an EV conversion who's had a complete nightmare with DVLA. Fundamentally the way DVLA are interpreting legislation means that because the owner has drilled a couple of holes in the boot, the car now needs to go through an IVA test and will be issued with a Q plate. It's bonkers but the DVLA are not giving an inch despite being very impressed with the conversion. It seems the implications of this might go far and wide, the owner even has his MP involved.
There's now a .gov petition started which hopefully will enable this to be discussed at the highest level, let's face it, everything else in government right now is rapidly becoming farce so something productive would be a welcome change!
I ask that as many people sign the petition as possible, this might not currently appear relevant but I'm sure it will in years to come, the bottom line being that we're all car enthusiasts together:
The way most of the classic car conversions maintain the original registration is to provide a fully reversible conversion that is module based using the existing mounting points, suspension and drive wheels. Hmm, I pushed the count up to 62, will need a bit more support to get noticed I think.

Signed it. Presumably the DVLA argument is to do with this "points" system Vehicle registration: Radically altered vehicles - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) and they are saying that the body in not unaltered so they do not get the required 5 points for the body.
Shame because I think a classic Mini would struggle to pass an IVA without a bit of work

That's both fascinating, and incredibly stupid. Clearly the DVLA have no idea what they are doing.
