Class 3 Grandad (was Class 1 Dad)
It’s mid-April and I’m about to start the 2011 Autoglym Lotus Seven Club Speed Championship. I’m Andrew Willoughby and I’ve competed for the past four years in Class 1 of the Championship, winning the class for the last two years. Class 1 has been brilliant – great people, excellent banter and wonderful competition. However, I felt that i needed a new challenge and this winter I bought a 2001 Roadsport A car to enter Class 3 – the class in which my son, Matthew, competes.

It’s been a busy winter. The car’s had new wheels and tyres, I’ve fitted Tillett seats, changed the roll cage, (we grandads aren’t as agile as we used to be!), and it’s got a new exhaust system, supplied by Simon Rogers of 7Tips Racing. Andy McMillan (McMillan Motorsport) has been brilliant in preparing the car for action.
I’ve just taken the car out for a final run on the road before fitting the timing strut and numbers for the first sprint of the year at Silverstone on Sunday. It feels really quick on the road, but we’ll have to wait and see how it performs against the clock.
Roll on Sunday!

Castle Combe sprint
It’s about time I updated this blog as my posts fizzled out after MIRA. So here’s the first of several updates.
Castle Combe should have been my sort of track, being not dissimilar to Goodwood where I tend to go quite well. I was, therefore looking forward to an enjoyable day of competition but without huge expectations as quite a few of the competition had been to a track day there a week or so earlier. I had never seen the place before.
I arrived nice and early having decided to do the 100 mile journey on the morning of the event. The only problem was that I thought I’d forgotten my boots but I later managed to find them in my helmet!

Practice went well and it turned out that Combe is very much my sort of track – wide and fast. I finished practice not as far behind as I had anticipated and was helped by being given a re-run, as were several others, when the timing gear failed to work on the 2nd practice run. The biggest problem we all faced was trying to find shelter. Not from the usual wind and rain but from the sun. It was absolutely boiling hot. Not that I’m complaining, mind. The food of choice was very much ice cream, so I had several.

Amazingly, after the first timed run I was leading Class 3 but with both Graeme Wardall and Michael Calvert hot on my heals with Jeff Smith just behind. For the final run I managed to find a bit more time again and, after waiting some considerable period for the times to be published on the notice board, I found out that I had just edged the win from Michael with a run of 70.90 seconds. I was over the moon with the result – it more than made up for my disappointing performance at MIRA last time out. It was just a shame that we weren’t given another run as there was plenty of time left – we were easily finished by 3 o’clock. However, if there was another run I may not have done so well so I shouldn’t complain too much.
See the video of my quickest run below. There is still more time to be found in 2011.
My 2nd timed run – 70.90 seconds
I then had a break before my next event at Harewood at the beginning of August which was the first event of 4 in the space of a hectic 5 weeks.

First absence
I surprised myself.......
At the beginning of April I felt really down knowing that Goodwood was coming up and that I wasn't going to be able to do anything. The weekend before was the Sprint Intro event and reading BC to see how it went and what people thought, then Goodwood itself. Thought frequently through the day of what would have been happening....scrutineering, noise check, ducks & drakes (poss), first practice, second practice, first timed, second timed....poss even a third timed....
What's happened? People would have known, some feeling good, some angry (with themselves or others), some satisfied, and I had no ideas.
As much as I don't want to live vicariously, it really surprised me how pleased and excited I was when Chris put the headline results into my BC query, and then Rob adding his comment for his success....Class record at Goodwood (Fast Circuit) That's got to be some energy boosthttp://my.lotussevenclub.com/Providers/HtmlEditorProviders/Fck/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/regular_smile.gif
It's nice to see people you know doing well, and then knowing there's still more info to come. Even stranger to be at work on a Sunday (arabian weekend) filling in time thinking about sprinting and writing this blog. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to view some videos today, although the firewall at the office blocks Youtube......doesn't block BC though!
